What is “detoxification”?
“Detox” is what is commonly referred to as the natural physiological mechanisms by which the body removes or neutralizes toxins and waste products. This process primarily occurs through the liver, kidneys, lungs, skin, and digestive system, which work together to filter and eliminate toxins. The liver is the only organ that actually detoxifies, while the rest are the primary elimination pathways to accomplish the body’s aim of detoxing for health through elimination.
The reason this is such a big topic these days is due to the onslaught of chemicals in our food, water, air and household products. It’s as if nothing is void of man-made toxins anymore. In this article we will explore why detoxing matters and how to incorporate common sense routines to mitigate some of the damage.
Hidden Toxins and risks
These pesky toxins are in the most obvious of places and not so obvious of places. Even organic food has acceptable levels of unnatural pesticides, herbicides and fungicides and are subject to the same environmental conditions as non-organically grown food. Micro plastics are in our waterways, food packaging and hygiene products. Air pollutants come from things like burning candles, air fresheners, industrial smoke stacks, spraying from airplanes and much more. Toxic metals comprise much of the above in some way.
The main avenues of entry of these molecules into our bodies is by breathing and swallowing. If the body cannot discard them immediately they must go into storage somewhere, preferentially somewhere safe. Regardless, they will find a home.
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), found in various consumer products, have been associated with endocrine disruption. A 2023 study by the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai linked high PFAS exposure to a 40% decrease in women's fertility, highlighting hormone disruption and delayed puberty onset.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a type of PFAS, as carcinogenic to humans based on sufficient evidence for cancer in animals and strong mechanistic evidence in exposed humans.
A recent study published in the Association for Child and Adolescent Mental Health revealed that over 150 million cases of mental health disorders, including ADHD, anxiety, and depression, may be linked to lead exposure from gasoline. Individuals born between 1966 and 1986, when leaded gasoline use was at its peak, had the highest rates of lead-associated mental illnesses.

A 2024 study by the University of Southern California found that common types of PFAS may cause sleep disorders in young adults aged 19 to 24. Participants with high PFAS blood levels slept an average of 80 minutes less per night compared to those with low levels.

Environmental toxins significantly impact ecosystems, affecting soil, water, and wildlife. These pollutants can re-enter the food chain, ultimately impacting human health. Excessive use of pesticides leads to soil contamination. Agricultural runoff transports pesticides into water bodies, contaminating drinking water sources and harming aquatic life.
Marine organisms ingest microplastics, leading to physical harm and exposure to toxic substances. Toxins accumulate in organisms and magnify up the food chain. Predators, including humans, consume prey with higher toxin concentrations, leading to health risks such as hormonal imbalances and cancer.
Benefits and methods of Detoxing for Health
Naturally when your body is less polluted it functions better. Functioning better can be felt with improved energy levels, hormonal balance, little to no symptoms of cleansing like the common cold, a healthy metabolism, sharp cognition and the list goes on.
Avoiding processed foods and replacing them with healthy choices like organic produce and oils, pasture raised or wild caught animals and clean mineralized water will go a long way to support your body in its daily detoxification process.
Use natural household products
Move your body sufficiently daily
Use targeted supplements
Read product labels and choose toxin-free options
Install drinking and shower water filters to reduce contamination
